How to remove rust from a shovel
1. Physical method:
Rust is mainly removed by grinding, such as sandpaper, grinding wheel, wire brush, steel wool, etc. for grinding.
2. Chemical method:
Mainly use the chemical reaction between acid and rust to achieve the purpose of rust removal.
The main components of common rust removers in daily life are hydrochloric acid and dilute sulfuric acid, which can react with iron oxide, penetrate into the surface of steel products along the cracks in the rust layer and impurity layer, and dissolve and peel off the rust layer and impurity layer. Thereby, the rust layer, impurities and scale are peeled off from the surface of the steel product.
Precautions for rust removal
1. Acid has certain corrosiveness, so it is necessary to wear protective clothing when removing rust. In addition, acid and iron will produce hydrogen gas, which will explode when exposed to open flames. Therefore, fireworks must be prohibited during rust removal operations.
2. Both hydrochloric acid and dilute sulfuric acid can react with iron oxide. Four factors should be considered in the selection: rust removal effect, production cost of acid, transportation and storage of acid, safety and environmental protection in use.
3. Using citric acid instead of hydrochloric acid and dilute sulfuric acid can solve the drawbacks of current rust removers polluting the environment, and glycerin can strengthen the adhesion of rust removers on metal surfaces. Moreover, this rust remover not only has the function of removing rust, but also has the function of preventing rust.
